Paul “Paula” Denyer, Australia
“The Frankston Serial Killer”
Paul Denyer began with stalking women in Frankston, Victoria, and soon progressed to threatening women. He bought a knife from a supermarket and held it to a female cashiers throat and threatened to kill her, before running off. On another occasion, in 1993, he followed a woman he vaguely knew and later broke into her flat. The woman and her three-month old baby were not at home. Denyer killed the cat and her kittens instead, gutting and mutilating them. He left a message written in the cat’s blood on the wall.
Later that year, he stalked and grabbed 18-year-old Elizabeth Stevens. He dragged her into a park and repeatedly stabbed her in the neck and upper body before slashing her across the chest. A month later, as young mother Debra Fream, 22, was buying milk, Denyer climbed into the backseat of her unlocked car. When Fream returned to her car, Denyer produced a fake gun and ordered her to drive to another location. There, Denyer attempted to strangle her with a cord. When this was unsuccessful, he stabbed her in the chest and neck and dumped the car. Denyer attacked another woman shortly after, but she managed to run away. Two weeks later, Denyer grabbed 17-year-old student Natalie Russell and dragged her into a park. He attempted to strangle her and then stabbed her as she pleaded for her life.
Denyer is serving three consecutive life sentences. He said that his motivation for killing was hatred of women:
POLICE: Can you explain why we have women victims?
DENYER: I just hate them.
POLICE: I beg your pardon.
DENYER: I hate them all.
POLICE: Those particular girls or women in general
DENYER: General.
At some point during his incarceration, Denyer began claiming a female “gender identity” and insisted on being called Paula. While Denyer is technically prohibited from wearing women’s clothing and cosmetics, other inmates report that he wears bras and uses cosmetics given to him by guards.
Denyer has been campaigning for state-funded sex reassignment surgery for more than 10 years. So far, his request has not been granted.
Wolfgang “Beate” Schmidt, Germany
“Pink Giant” / “The Beast of Beelitz”
In 1989 in Brandenburg, Wolfgang Schmidt murdered 51 year old, Edeltraud Nixdorf, as she was outside gardening. In 1990, Schmidt raped 55 year old Christa Naujoks, then murdered her by strangling her with a cord. Investigators found pink underwear at the scene which didn’t belong to the victim. In 1991, Schmidt raped and stabbed 34-year-old Inge Borkheide to death, and left her body in the woods.
In 1991, 44 year old Tamara P. was walking through the woods with her 3 month old son in his stroller. Schmidt grabbed the baby from the stroller and smashed him up against a tree, killing him instantly, he then gagged Tamara with a bra and strangled her to death.
Two weeks later Schmidt attempted to grab a 12-year-old girl who was walking with her friend. Both girls escaped and were able to provide a description of Schmidt to police. Days later Schmidt entered the home of 66-year old Talita, and strangled her and raped her corpse.
Later, two men discovered a man masturbating in the woods, wearing a bra under his jacket. They recognized the description and detained Schmidt, who was later arrested. Schmidt was sentenced to 15 years in prison and detention in a psychiatric facility.
Schmidt claimed a female “gender identity” and asked the court to be addressed as a woman and by a female name. In 2001, the courts granted the request and his name was changed to “Beate”. Since 2009 Schmidt has undergone hormone treatment, and has campaigned for sex reassignment surgery. In 2010 Schmidt was investigated for raping and causing another transsexual inmate to attempt suicide
